What’s on TV tonight: A retired copper becomes Midsomer’s latest murder victim

Pick of the day: Midsomer Murders

8.15pm, ITV1

This latest Midsomer has a whiff of The Thursday Murder Club about it. It focuses on a gated estate that houses a tight-knit community for retired police officers. However, when a new arrival is found dead, the other residents regard the murder as both an affront and a challenge. Neil Dudgeon’s Barnaby realises that the killer is likely to be an ex-police officer too. Tom Conti stars.

Women Under Hitler’s Flag

8.50pm, PBS America

“I long to hurl myself in this current, to be submerged and borne along with it…” claims a 15-year-old girl at a Nazi rally. She was to become one of the thousands of women who served the Third Reich. Christiane Ratiney explores why in this two-part film looking at the female participants in the Nazi regime, including the brutal and merciless Ravensbrück concentration camp guard Elfriede Huth, Some girls joined the Hitler Youth (BDM) as an act of rebellion and to attach themselves “to something grand”. In 1933, more than 200,000 girls joined the BDM. With the rise of the far-right in Europe and the US, this document is as relevant now as ever.

The Yorkshire Vet: At Home with the Greens

8pm, Channel 5

This new series celebrates the everyday lives of two of Britain’s oldest working farmers, Steve and Jean Green. At 93 and 72 years old respectively, this couple have always done things the traditional way, but now they’re looking for new ideas to keep their farm afloat, including alpaca walks, a glamping-site and even a luxury cat hotel. In this first episode, the Greens reminisce about the sad day when they had to sell their beloved herd of milking cows; Peter Wright treats their calf Plum for a nasty case of ringworm; and Matt Smith visits a much younger North Yorkshire farmer to check on one of his pregnant longhorn cows.

Still reeling from her discovery, Jenna Coleman’s DC Ember Manning is keen to find out what Riz (Weruche Opia) knows about the Amy Knightly case. They share information and Ember tells Riz her suspicions about Miranda’s abuser. Ember is horrified when she’s told that the lake is to be searched for Amy’s remains. When Riz stops returning Ember’s calls, Ember suspects that it’s because she has uncovered the terrible truth about Amy. A serviceable crime drama.

Daley: Olympic Superstar

9pm, BBC Two

A look at the life of double Olympic decathlon champion Daley Thompson, featuring never-before-seen footage. The programme explores the personal struggles the athlete faced to rise from the humblest of beginnings to become the ultimate Olympian, while revealing what it took to become the greatest decathlete in the world.

Horsepower

10.15 and 11.10pm, BBC Four

“Although we really, really want to win the Derby, I wouldn’t want to compromise the career of a horse for the sake of that one race,” admits horse trainer Andrew Balding who doesn’t yet have a standout horse for the Derby, the race he’s obsessed with winning, and “the pressure’s on”. It’s also the week following Prince Philip’s death, and Balding runs Tactical, owned by Her Majesty and ridden by Oisin Murphy, at Newmarket. Andrew’s sister, the broadcaster Clare, visits and recalls their childhood growing up in a trainer’s yard at Kingsclere.
