Cancel culture has an appointment with mainstream television in form of a new comedy series coming to ITV.
Set in the world of television news, Douglas is Cancelled is a four-part comedy drama series written by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Sherlock, Dracula) and starring actors Hugh Bonneville and Karen Gillan.
When national treasure news presenter Douglas Bellowes (Bonneville) tells a sexist joke at a wedding, he comes face-to-face with the realities of cancel culture.
His career appears to be on the line and knowing who he can count on for support becomes as much an issue as the original faux pas.
Creater Moffat said he wrote it originally as a stage play five years ago, long before Huw Edwards and Phillip Schofield left our screens.
But he told The Guardian: “It doesn’t matter which period you put this story in: there will be somebody who fell from grace in TV.”
When is Douglas is Cancelled released?
Episode one of the series will premier on ITV1 on Thursday 27 June from 9pm-10pm. The successive three episodes will air weekly at the same time as the first on ITV1.
All four episodes will also be available to stream on ITVX after the first episode has been broadcast.
